ACS Division of Chemical Education Southeastern Regional Award for Excellence in High School Teaching

The High School Teacher Award is given annually to an individual who demonstrates excellence in teaching chemistry at a high school within the Southeastern Region.

Award

The award consists of a plaque and travel expenses (within certain restrictions) to the SERMACS meeting where the award is given.

Award Promoters

Glenn and Jane Crosby

The High School Teaching Award owes its standing within ACS, particularly as a Regional award, to the fundraising and championing efforts of Glenn and Jane Crosby. For these contributions they have received numerous awards: the Division of Chemical Education Outstanding Service Award (Glenn, 2003; Jane, 2006), the ACS Northwest Region Volunteer Service Award (Jane, 2006), and the Charles Lathrop Parsons Award (Glenn and Jane, 2009). Glenn Crosby is Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at Washington State University and has received numerous awards for his research, including the American Institute of Chemists Pioneer Award, 2006.

Current Awardee

Sondra Wieland

Ms. Wieland has taught high school chemistry for 13 years. Prior accolades include recognition as Chemistry Teacher of the Year by the Carolina-Piedmont ACS Section in 1990, and by the South Carolina section in 1998; State of South Carolina Science Teacher of the Year by the South Carolina Academy of Science in 1991 and by the South Carolina Association of Chemistry Teachers in 1997; South Carolina Governor's Award for Science Awareness in 2009; and the State of South Carolina NSF Presidential Awardee for Excellence in Science Teaching in 1999 and 2000. For her sustained support of National Chemistry Week, Ms. Wieland has received the American Chemical Society’s Salute to Excellence (2004) and was twice recognized by the ACS for distinguished service to the South Carolina local section (1996 & 2007). Ms. Wieland teaches at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, South Carolina.
